Bees, butterflies and other pollinators play a key role in our gardens. Hence, sowing plants that attract them and help them survive has become a priority for most gardeners.

Learning about pollinators and why they are so important is an essential gardening and environmental lesson for children. Such lesson can be followed by a fun planting session and, once the seeds have grown, children can observe all the amazing pollinators visiting their new plants.

The Piccolo Pollinators' Flowers Seed Collection has been designed for both urban and country gardeners so these seeds don't need a large garden to grow, a pot or a balcony would suffice.

The Pollinators' Flowers seed collection comprises three seed packets:

  • Brighton Rock Snapdragon - an heirloom variety with an attractive mix of pastel bi-coloured flowers. The name is derived from its dragon mouth-shaped blooms. Due to the weight of their petals snapdragons can only be pollinated by large insects such as bumblebees as smaller ones do not have enough strength to push them apart. They make great companion plants for tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and melons.
  • Starfire Mix Marigold - are a variety with golden and orange blooms, dwarf habit and lacy foliage. They are hardy, easy to grow and make fantastic companion plants that repel many known pests. While acting as pest repellent, they are loved by both bees and butterflies. The petals and leaves can also be eaten or can be dried for later use.
  • Lavender Munstead Blue - a variety of lavender that is known for its compact early blooming bluish-purple flowers and grey-green leaves. It is great at attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies and makes perfect companion plant for thyme, oregano, nepeta, borage, chamomile and nigella. The health benefits of lavender are well known and the flowers can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes.

The seeds are of certified standard, non-GMO and non-hybrid. The latter is particularly important to us as we believe that it is good for children to witness the whole seed-to-seed cycle and learn to grow from seeds that they have picked from the plants they originally grew (when possible!).

The packaging of the seeds is also very eco-conscious with heat-sealed paper envelopes and contains a description of the plant and how to grow it best.

Please note that these seeds have been designed for adults and children alike and so not all the 'advice/suggestions for use' on the packaging is relevant for children.
